Sad Song for the New Breed is an installation, which was first shown in Mariakapel in Hoorn in 1999. It consists of several thousands paint tubes cut open, which were placed on their caps. The wide field of flowers that resulted is sung to by an audio device that floats above this field. It moves very slowly from left to right and back again and produces a high, piercing sound. The audio device is fed by a solar panel. The installation Sad Song for the New Breed questions not only the default mediums a painter uses on formal grounds, but also puts it in a social and environmental context.
